Wind Farm Trip

On Friday 22nd of November 3rd to 6th class took a trip to the local wind farm in Bonniconlon. This trip was organised and sponsored by Martin Sweeney from NTR. The bus picked us up at the school at 10:30 and we headed up the mountains to the wind farm. When we arrived on site we had to sign in and Martin gave us a talk on safety regulations on site. Firstly we went to a turbine that was not erected yet. It was very interesting to learn about the amount of concrete that is needed to keep the turbine up. The men on site were great at answering our questions. We then when to a fully functioning turbine ready to be turned on. We were allowed climb up the steps and go inside the turbine. There is a ladder that can bring you all the way to the top but that is only for the workers. Martin explained everything we needed to know about how the wind turbines generate power. At the end of the trip Martin picked out the best question of the day which was Kieran’s. “Why are the turbines there?” Simple but important. It was a fantastic, educational trip.
