We are applying for our 3rd award for STEM Excellence (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) facilitated by Science Foundation Ireland. We have also been selected with 30 schools around Ireland to participate in a pilot scheme for a Badge in STEM Excellence. The purpose of this programme is to demonstrate our efforts to raise awareness and excitement about STEM among pupils, teachers and parents/guardians.
In Primary School children experience STEM through subjects such as Science, Maths and Design and Make. STEM education involves a cross-disciplinary approach, it fosters design, creativity and innovation.
STEM education focuses on a range of skills that are essential for living and working in today’s world. Learners will engage in a range of activities that include:
- Curiousity – imagining, questioning and exploring
- Creativity –innovating, designing and making
- Collaboration – working with others to discuss an issue, solve a problem or to create something
- Communicating – communicating their own ideas on a concept or issue
- Critical thinking – using their skills and content knowledge to compare, contrast, evaluate, understand and classify information
Later this year we will be looking for your feedback on your awareness of STEM activities at school and outside of school and how you think these skills might be important in the future.
Engineering Week provides us with a tremendous opportunity to develop our STEM skills. Teachers provide pupils with many design and make tasks and provide an inquiry based environment to further develop skills.
